Abstract
Background and Purpose: The existence of ethnic diversity in Iran and the necessity of strengthening national cohesion—particularly in border regions such as those inhabited by the Turkmen—represent a strategic imperative and one of the key national challenges and necessities. Accordingly, the aim of this study is to identify a scientific and systematic model for promoting national cohesion among Iranian ethnic groups, with an emphasis on the Turkmen community.
Research Method: The present study is descriptive and qualitative in nature. The data collection tool consists of semi-structured interviews with a community of experts in the country familiar with the research topic. Considering the theoretical saturation of the data, interviews were conducted with 18 individuals. Data analysis was performed using the three-level thematic analysis technique (basic themes, organizing themes, and overarching themes).
Findings: The thematic analysis revealed that strengthening national unity, reducing ethnic tensions, enhancing a shared national identity, economic development in Turkmen regions, and the political participation of the Turkmen ethnicity in national decision-making are among the contextual requirements for convergence. Cultural-social, economic, and political challenges are also considered obstacles along this path.
Conclusion: To address these challenges and strengthen convergence, strategies such as enhancing infrastructure, organizing cultural-social programs, and implementing macro-policies are recommended. The consequences of national convergence can lead to regional and national opportunities for various ethnicities and help redefine multicultural national identity while reducing cultural discrimination.
